How AI is used
CoderCoach uses artificial intelligence to support educational guidance and learning activities. AI-generated responses are validated against applicable coding standards where available — the system retrieves evidence from the coding standards content before generating any response.
AI disclosure
CoderCoach uses artificial intelligence to support educational guidance and learning activities. AI-generated responses are validated against applicable coding standards where available. Learners remain responsible for exercising professional judgment when applying coding standards in practice.
AI technology
- Large language model (LLM) technology for text generation
- Semantic search against the coding standards content (vector and full-text retrieval)
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) grounds every answer in the source material
- No patient data is processed — all cases are educational or fictional
- User inputs are not used to train AI models
Human verification
AI-generated coding guidance is for educational purposes only. For production coding decisions, users must exercise professional judgment and verify against the official standards for their jurisdiction and fiscal year. CoderCoach does not imply certification or endorsement by any standards body.

Standards update process
When new versions of a classification are released, the platform database is updated to import the new code tables, reference documentation, and validation rules. The standards version in use is displayed on coding screens, and users are notified when the platform is updated to a new release.
Non-endorsement
CoderCoach is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the CDC, NCHS, CMS, the World Health Organization, CIHI, or any other standards body, and none of these organizations has reviewed or approved its content or functionality. Canadian standards are covered by the Canadian Edition (opens in a new tab).
Security & data
Infrastructure
- Hosted on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure
- All data in transit encrypted (TLS 1.2+)
- All data at rest encrypted
- Authentication uses industry-standard JWT tokens with session management
- Row-level security enforced at the database layer
Data handling
- No real patient data is stored or processed
- Coding questions are educational in nature
- User activity (assessments, questions) is logged for educational progress tracking
- Questions and answers are processed by AI services under standard data processing agreements
- No personal health information (PHI) is handled
Compliance posture
The platform is designed for educational use in healthcare organizations. It does not handle personal health information (PHI) or patient records. For organizations with specific security requirements, please contact us for an enterprise security questionnaire.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just use ChatGPT or a general AI assistant for coding questions?
General AI tools answer from what they remember, which may be out of date or blend different classifications. They can return codes from a previous fiscal year, mix up ICD-10-CM with another country's modification, or produce codes that don't exist. CoderCoach retrieves answers from the coding standards content before generating any response, and cites its sources.
Do AI answers count as professional coding advice?
No. All AI-generated guidance is for educational purposes only. For production coding decisions, always verify against the official standards for your jurisdiction and the current fiscal year, and apply professional judgment. Learners remain responsible for their coding decisions in clinical and administrative practice.
Can coders use the AI tutor during actual clinical coding work?
The platform is designed for education. We recommend using it for training, self-study, and professional development — not as a real-time coding aid during active production coding. For real-time coding support, refer to the official code books and guidelines for your jurisdiction.
How current are the coding standards on the platform?
The standards version in use is displayed on coding screens. Classifications such as ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS are updated annually with a fiscal-year effective date, and the platform is updated when new releases are published. There may be a short period between an official release and the platform's update during which a prior version is shown, so confirm the version matches your requirements.
Is my data private? Will my questions be used to train AI?
No patient data is stored or processed — all scenarios are educational — and user inputs are not used to train AI models. Educational questions are processed as described in our Privacy Policy.
Do you offer a security questionnaire for procurement?
Yes. The platform is designed for educational use and does not handle personal health information or patient records. If your organization has specific security or procurement requirements, contact us for an enterprise security questionnaire.
Questions for your privacy or procurement team?
We're happy to walk through the platform and complete a security questionnaire.
